Awakening the Watchmen: Praying for the Exploited, Trafficked, and Abused

There are people living in hidden places, behind closed doors, in situations many of us will never see. Some are being trafficked. Some are being sexually exploited. Some are trapped by violence, coercion, manipulation, addiction, fear, poverty, or threats. Some are children. Some are adults. Some have been convinced that no one will ever come for them.

But God sees them.

He knows their names. He knows their stories. He sees every tear, every wound, every moment of fear, and every injustice committed against them.

And He is calling His people to wake up and pray.

We Cannot Look Away

The Bible repeatedly calls God's people to defend the vulnerable, speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, and pursue justice.

“Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy.”
Psalm 82:3

Prayer does not mean ignoring practical action. It means refusing to believe that darkness has the final word.

We can pray.
We can speak.
We can support organizations that rescue and restore victims.
We can learn the warning signs of exploitation.
We can report suspected abuse and trafficking to the appropriate authorities.
And we can ask God to raise up people who will intervene with wisdom, courage, and compassion.

The Church must wake up.

We cannot become so accustomed to hearing about trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and violence that we stop being moved.

These are not statistics.

They are people created in the image of God.

Pray for Those Who Are Trapped

Let us pray that God would break chains of fear, manipulation, coercion, and control.

Pray for victims to encounter people who recognize what is happening and know how to help.

Pray for hidden doors to open.

Pray for safe escapes.

Pray for protection from retaliation.

Pray for physical, emotional, and spiritual restoration.

Pray that children and adults who have been exploited would come to understand that what happened to them does not define their worth.

They are not what someone did to them.

They are not merchandise.

They are not disposable.

They are precious lives made in the image of God.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3

Pray that God would surround survivors with safe people, wise counselors, advocates, medical professionals, law enforcement officers, pastors, mentors, and communities that will help them rebuild their lives.

Pray for the Hidden Places

Ask God to expose what has been hidden.

Pray for trafficking networks to be discovered.

Pray for places where exploitation is occurring to come into the light.

Pray for those who facilitate abuse, profit from exploitation, recruit victims, transport victims, or knowingly participate in their oppression to be exposed and stopped.

Pray for investigators to receive the information they need.

Pray for evidence to be uncovered.

Pray for corrupt systems to be confronted.

Pray for justice to prevail.

And pray for God to place courageous people in strategic positions who will refuse bribes, intimidation, compromise, or silence.

“For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.”
Luke 8:17

But Don't Stop There—Pray for the Perpetrators

This is where our prayers can become difficult.

What do we pray for those who are exploiting, trafficking, abusing, manipulating, and destroying others?

We pray for justice.

And we also pray for repentance.

We can ask God to stop their evil, expose their crimes, restrain their hands, protect their victims, and bring appropriate earthly justice.

But we can also cry out for something that only God can accomplish:

A Saul-to-Paul transformation.

Saul was a persecutor of the Church.

He was actively opposing God's people.

But then came the Damascus Road.

“Suddenly a light from heaven shone around him.”
Acts 9:3

Saul encountered Jesus.

And the man who had been persecuting Christians became the apostle Paul, proclaiming the very Christ he had once opposed.

That is the kind of radical transformation we can ask God to bring into the lives of perpetrators.

Lord, Give Them a Damascus Moment

Pray:

“Father, confront those who are committing these atrocities with Your truth. Interrupt their plans. Stop them from harming another person. Remove the deception that has blinded their hearts. Bring them to a place where they can no longer run from what they have done. Let them encounter You.”

Pray for conviction—not merely guilt.

Guilt can make someone hide.

Godly conviction leads to repentance.

Pray that perpetrators would suddenly see the humanity of the people they have exploited.

Pray that their hearts would be pierced by the reality of the damage they have caused.

Pray that pride would be broken.

Pray that greed would lose its power.

Pray that lust, hatred, violence, manipulation, and the hunger for control would be confronted by the holiness of God.

Pray that they would turn away from evil and surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.

Give them a Damascus Road encounter, Lord.

But let us be clear:

Praying for repentance does not mean excusing evil.

Forgiveness does not erase accountability.

Grace does not mean there should be no consequences.

A genuine Saul-to-Paul transformation produces a completely different life.

Pray for Genuine Repentance

Pray that perpetrators who truly encounter Christ would:

  • Confess their wrongdoing.

  • Stop harming others.

  • Turn away from exploitation.

  • Cooperate with legitimate investigations.

  • Accept appropriate consequences for their actions.

  • Seek genuine accountability.

  • Make restitution where possible.

  • Submit themselves to the transforming work of God.

  • Become people who protect rather than exploit.

  • Use whatever influence they have to expose the evil they once participated in.

We are not asking God to simply make perpetrators feel bad.

We are asking Him to transform them.

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

Pray for the Church to Wake Up

Church, we cannot sleep through this.

We cannot allow our prayers to remain theoretical.

There are people praying for rescue while we are going about our daily lives.

There are mothers wondering where their children are.

There are survivors trying to rebuild after unimaginable trauma.

There are children who need someone to notice.

There are perpetrators who desperately need to encounter the truth of God before they destroy another life.

Wake us up, Lord.

Give Your Church eyes to see.

Give us ears to hear.

Give us courage to speak.

Give us wisdom to act.

Give us compassion without naivety.

Give us discernment without suspicion.

Give us courage without recklessness.

Give us justice without hatred.

And give us the heart of Jesus toward those who are suffering.

A Prayer for the Exploited and Trafficked

Father,

We lift before You every person being trafficked, exploited, abused, imprisoned, manipulated, or controlled.

You know where they are.

You know their names.

You know what they have endured.

Be their refuge.

Protect them from further harm. Surround them with Your protection and bring trustworthy people into their path who can help them reach safety.

Open doors that no human being can shut.

Expose hidden places.

Reveal what has been concealed.

Bring the right authorities, advocates, rescuers, counselors, and helpers into position.

Restore what has been stolen.

Heal what has been broken.

Rebuild what has been destroyed.

Remind every survivor that they are valuable, worthy of dignity, and created in Your image.

And Father, we pray for those committing these atrocities.

Confront them.

Stop their hands from harming another person.

Expose their evil.

Break the power of deception, greed, lust, violence, and control.

And then, Lord, do what only You can do:

Give them a Damascus Road encounter.

Let them encounter Jesus so profoundly that they cannot continue living the way they have been living.

Bring genuine repentance.

Bring confession.

Bring accountability.

Bring transformation.

Turn persecutors into protectors.

Turn exploiters into advocates for the vulnerable.

Turn hearts of stone into hearts that understand the value of every human life.

And where earthly justice is required, let justice be done.

Let truth prevail.

Let darkness be exposed.

Let the oppressed find freedom.

Let the wounded find healing.

Let the Church awaken.

And let Your light shine into every place where darkness has hidden.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Will You Become a Watchman?

You may never personally meet someone being trafficked.

You may never enter a trafficking operation.

You may never sit across the table from a perpetrator.

But you can pray.

You can pray for the person whose name you don't know.

You can pray for the child whose location you will never see.

You can pray for the survivor whose story has never been told.

You can pray for the investigator searching for evidence.

You can pray for the advocate helping someone escape.

You can pray for the perpetrator who desperately needs to encounter Jesus.

And you can pray that God would awaken His Church.

Don't look away.

Don't become numb.

Don't assume someone else is praying.

Stand in the gap.

Pray for rescue.

Pray for protection.

Pray for justice.

Pray for healing.

Pray for exposure.

Pray for repentance.

Pray for transformation.

And pray for Damascus Road moments that turn those who once participated in darkness into people who become instruments of light.

The darkness may be hidden from our eyes—but it is never hidden from God.
